| Annotation | The writings in this volume, on the contrary, testify to a comic vision derived from a keen sence of literary absurdities and pretensions. At the same time, they offer an impotant insight into Poe's more serious fiction, in which he subjects many of his cherished formulas to the corrective force of parody: the witty and macabre decapitation of Senora Psyche Zenobia, for example, clearly foreshadows The Pit and the Pendulum.
